A Bit of History

The Association of Fetomaternal Medicine Specialists of Nigeria is the premier association in Nigeria formed to promote Fetomaternal Medicine in the country and across the African continent. The Association was formed in 2011 by a group of leading and experienced fetomaternal medicine experts across Nigeria

Aims & Objectives

  • To promote research and study into the advancement of of the field of Fetomaternal medicine in Nigeria and Africa
  • To promote international standards in the practice of Fetomaternal medicine in Nigeria and Africa
  • To promote quality obstetric emergency and neonatal care in Nigeria and Africa

Fetomaternal Medicine

Fetomaternal medicine (sometimes called Maternal-Fetal medicine or MFM) is the branch of Obstetrics that focuses on the medical and surgical management of high risk pregnancies. Management includes monitoring and treatment including comprehensive ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling, genetic amniocentesis and fetal surgery or treatment.

Obstetricians who practice maternal-fetal medicine are also known as perinatologists. This is a subspecialty to obstetrics and gynaecology mainly used for patients with high risk pregnancies

Mission Statement

The Association is and shall be a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental association which seeks to fashion out lasting strategies to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality ratios in Nigeria through advocacy, capacity building, quality research and cutting edge services in conjunction with other organisations that are invoiced in activities relating to:

1. The promotion of quality care to the pregnant woman with pregnancy-related and non-pregnancy -related problems
2. The provision of quality care to the unborn viable fetus
3. The growth, the development and education of the girl child
4. Sexual and reproductive health
5. Initiation and adequate use of antenatal care
6. Quality obstetric care in general, especially emergency services
7. Quality early neonatal care
